How Many Porta Potties Do I Need?

Answer four questions and you’ll have a working count in a second — including the accessible units and sinks people forget.

A planning estimate, not a quote. Site layout, permits and ground conditions move the real number — call (206) 495-0698 and we’ll confirm it.

    The Rules Behind the Numbers

Nothing here is invented. Event planning across the industry starts from one unit per fifty guests for an event up to four hours, and scales up with duration. Work sites plan on one unit per ten workers over a forty-hour week. Alcohol pushes usage up by roughly a fifth, and festivals spread over a bigger footprint can run slightly leaner per head because the crowd is never all in one place at once.

    The Two Things People Under-Order

Accessible units and handwashing stations. A public event generally needs at least one ADA unit, and about five percent of the total once you get into larger counts. And because standard and ADA units have no sink, a handwashing station is the only place anyone can actually wash their hands — which matters a great deal if there is food on site.

    What the Calculator Can’t See

Whether your Seattle site is a closed street or a soft lawn. Whether the crowd is in one place or spread across a park. Whether the permit dictates placement. Whether the ground will hold a service truck in February. Those change the plan more than the arithmetic does, which is why the last step is always a two-minute phone call.

    FAQ

    About This Calculator

How does the calculator work out the number?
It starts from the standard planning ratios — one unit per fifty guests for a four-hour event, one per ten workers for a forty-hour work week — then adjusts for duration, alcohol and event type, and adds accessible units and handwashing stations on top.
    Is the result a quote?
No, it’s a planning estimate. Ground conditions, site layout, permit requirements and how spread out your crowd is can all shift the real number. Call and we’ll confirm it in a minute.
Why does alcohol change the count?
Because consumption goes up markedly. The usual planning adjustment is around 15–20% more units when there’s a bar, and it’s the single most common reason an event runs short.
Why does it always add a handwashing station?
Because standard and ADA units don’t have sinks. If there’s food, an inspection, or a construction site with dust or concrete, the station isn’t optional in practice.
What if my number looks too high?
Call us. We’d rather talk you down to the right count than sell you units you don’t need — a customer who over-rents once doesn’t call back.
